The 12 Stages

Hey fellow classmates, here is the summary of 12 stages. Hope you find it useful.


  1. Ordinary World

A condition of hero’s life that is considered comfortable with the natural order of things; Ordinary World shows the contrast of Special World.

  1. Call To Adventure

Disorder of natural order of things

Presentation of a Problem, Challenge or Adventure to hero to undertake, it clears the goal of hero.

  1. Refusal of The Call


The stage the hero has not yet fully committed to the journey and may still thinking of turning back. Three elements can lead the hero forward:

    • Change of circumstances
    • Mentor’s encouragement
    • Further offense against natural order of things.

  1. Mentor

A character who prepare the hero to face the unknown

It stands for bond of teacher and student, parent and child, etc

  1. Crossing The First Threshold

Turning point between act one and two where hero makes decision to face the consequences of problem or challenge posed in Call For Adventure.

  1. Test, Allies and enemies

The first stage of act two in which hero encounters Tests, Makes allies and enemies and Begins to learn the rules of the special world

Characters develop by their reaction under stress.

  1. Approach To The Inmost Cave

Stage of preparing to face the greatest enemy and entering the most dangerous spot in the Special World.

It is crossing the second major threshold.

  1. The Ordeal

The stage in which hero must die or appear to die so that she can be born again

The first Life-Or-Death moment

  1. Reward (seizing the sword)

Stage of celebrating the survival of the hero from the Ordeal

  • Better understanding of shapeshifters
  • Becoming more attractive
  • Settling down some conflicts
  • Reconciling with the opposite sex

10. The Road Back

Crossing to act three in which hero begins to deal with the consequences of confronting the dark forces of Ordeal

Hero decides to get back to Ordinary World and there are still dangerous, temptations and test ahead.

11. Resurrection

Second Life-Or-Death moment and final exam for hero to be tested whether or not he has learned the lessons of the Ordeal

12. Return With Elixir

Returning to the ordinary world Elixir, a magical option with power to heal, in order to not repeat the adventure

Repetition of adventure is a comic ending, as a foolish character refuses to learn his lesson and falls in the same trouble in the first place.
