Artist Talk by Eric Van Hove - Algerian artist based in Tokyo
This artist talk is part of the larger series of what the artist labels as "storytelling objects". Each uses a number of earlier works and interventions (some unfinished or never even shown) as the base for a display of ideas and ruminations believed to be more meaningfully conveyed through stories. Maybe here the travelling contemporary artist is in some way similar to the Kamishibai of Japan who, between the two world wars, was telling from the back of his bike different stories based on a number of picture cards.
Eric Van Hove graduated from E>R>G> in Brussels, studied Traditional Japanese Calligraphy (MFA, Tokyo) and obtained his Doctor of Arts from Tokyo Geidai University of Fine Arts and Music. He is based between Europe, Africa and Japan.
This talk is organized by Rumah Air Panas in collaboration with The Annexe Gallery.

Talking about the MATAHATIs
Panel Discussion
In conjunction with the ongoing 4-galleries spanning retrospective of leading contemporary art collective MATAHATI, this panel discussion focuses on the five artists and the role they have played in the Malaysian arts scene. The discussion brings together some of the contributing writers to the catalogue accompanying the exhibition MATAHATI: For Your Pleasure.
The panellists include: Exhibition curator June Yap, writers Wong Hoy Cheong, Adeline Ooi, Ahmad Mashadi, Hasnul J. Saidon and Carmen Nge.
Comprising Ahmad Fuad Osman, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Hamir Soib @ Mohamed and Masnoor Ramli Mahmud, MATAHATI was formed in the late 1980s. Since then, the members of this collective have carved their names in the Malaysian art scene through their activities and practice, accomplished either individually or together. MATAHATI – For Your Pleasure tells the story of the artists' early development through to recent explorations in their practice, reflecting upon their insights and study of concerns regarding identity, representation, humanity, community, social responsibility and religion.
