Hello dudes how have you been! Started with your gold-digging journeys yet? :D

I have received an invitation from the President of Malaysia's Animation Society to attend this "Tra-Digital Myth-Making" exhibition's opening ceremony on 15th July (Wednesday).

The exhibition is mainly showing a selection of artistic works by students and studios that will open your eyes to many Asian myths, folklore and legends with themes relevant to the 20th century, and the digital age that are capable of being transferred to the animation medium for a global audience (I could somehow relate it to our FYP theme)!

Another special thing about it is that there will be classical performances played by some really cool artists (not sure if they're from Singapore or local tho).

Anyway, if you are very free at home or bored of works, just go and explore more art! :)

I received this invite today for a free 3D training programme and I thought I'd share with you guys maybe someone might benefit from this. Its basically a 2 month training programme + 1 month apprenticeship to train up your 3D skills and after that they will help you get a job placement. Not only that, each month you will get a RM500 allowance during the training.

Here are some of the details:

Trained by: A specialized 3D skill training centre with industrial links
Software used: Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop
Location: Leisure Commerce Square (KTM Setia Jaya Station),

Petaling Jaya (100m from Sunway Pyramid)

Kolej Yayasan Sabah, Kota Kinabalu

Facilities: A computer lab which opens 24hrs x 7 days a week for hands-on works & practice
Starts: 29 June 2009 (9.30am – 5.30pm, 5 days a week)
Duration: 2 months intensive skill training + 1 month apprenticeship
Allowance: Paid allowance of RM500 a month

But a word of notice though, don't have too high expectation because I read through the requirements and it seems like they are willing to train those with zero knowledge as well. Ng Chor Guan (composer, laptop and electronics)
Ng Chor Guan gains his Bachelor of Arts (HONS) Music in Composition from Middlesex University in London. His diverse professional credits include music for concert, film, theater, dance, exhibition and multimedia. His music has been performed in a wide variety of mediums including orchestral, choral, chamber, and electronic music. Ng has participated in theatrical productions such as Antigone, Okiku- A Tragedy Retold, The Lost and The Ecliptic, Break-ing., The Curse of The Forbidden Palace, Whispers of Love, The ‘R’ Adventurous Drift and Nutcracker. He was nominated for 2008 Cameronian Arts Awards Most Promising Artist.

Yong Yandsen (bass clarinet)
Co-founder of SicKL, Yandsen is the veteran lead singer and band leader of the explosive Chinese rock band MoXuan who has now ventured into the realm of contemporary, music, free jazz and improvised music. He has acted in the independent short film by Kok Kai Foong, “Yandsen Can Do”. Besides making music, Yandsen is very good with driving directions.

Tham Kar Mun (clarinet)
Member of EMACM (Experimental Musicians & Artists Corporative Malaysia), Tham is the veteran guitarist of Chinese rock band ChongYang. In recent years, he has been exploring music in contemporary composition, improvisation and free jazz. Tham reads Lao Tze and likes to drink tea, slowly.

Kok Siew Wai (voice)
Co-founder of SicKL, a video artist and voice improviser. Siew Wai has spent much time organizing art events nowadays. She wanted to be a rocker during her teenage years but it never happened. Instead, she has been inspired greatly by composer Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice during her 7-year stay in USA, where it is a total contrast to rock.

JacAl Map – Experimental sounds
JacAl Map is a duo established in 2007. Jack is a musician and sound engineer while Alison is a student in New Era College Drama and Visuals Department. Their works uses sound extracted from everyday lives to create and explore sound that has an imaginative quality.

Ben Kong – Stand-up Show
He thinks he is funny, we all think he is funny. He doesn't want to reveal too much about himself in case he is not funny. Come meet the mystery man and ask him yourself!

Azmyl Yunor – Guitar Improv

Azmyl Yunor has dabbled in folk, rock n' roll, free-form, punk, and social sciences. He plays acoustic guitar, harmonica and sings his own songs. He records those songs and sells them. He also plays electric guitar, drums, keyboard, piano and the concertina. He is a co-founder of EMACM and Troubadours Enterprise. He is also a joker.

HI everyone, just wanna post a little promotion stuff here. During my internship period, me and hidhir have been involved in this project called ‘Geng’. It was the Malaysian first 3d animated feature film and we should be proud that Malaysian capable of producing 3d animated feature film. I’ve watched the film and it was very interesting. The storyline is simple, fast and entertaining. The visual are also nice. This movie looks very Malaysian from the environment and storyline. It will be release on Malaysian cinemas starting 12^th February 2009. So don’t forget to watch.

Synopsis :
Something disturbs the peace in the village of Kampong Durian Runtuh. Villagers tell of a fearsome beast lurking at night but no one dares to find out what it is until Badrol, Lim and their newfound friends stumble upon the very heart of the mystery itself. A small peculiar animal, not native of the forest befriends Rajoo and brings the whole gang into an adventure deep into the exotic Malaysian rainforest filled with dangerous animals including an age old mystical giant snake. Join the gang as they embark on a journey of action and adventure set upon the warm atmosphere of a Malaysian village enclosed by landscapes of greenery.

Yes they will be coming to Cyberjaya, Malaysia and not just for a visit. But for real. Seriously this is smtg really big. Rhythm & Hues setting up a studio in Malaysia?!? (and they are eyeing on Cyberjaya to setup their studio)

Their plans are to be fully operational by end of 2009 with estimated 40 recruits to start with. Definitely something to look forward to.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS/MUSICIANS:

CHAN SEAU HUVI is a performance artist and a video artist. She is graduated from l’école superièure d’art d’Aix en Provence, France. Huvi starts producing videos for her performance since 2002. She is currently living and working in Kuala Lumpur.

AFFENDI HJ RAMLI born in Ipoh, Malaysia, currently he is a doctoral student, under supervision by Dr. Hasnizam Abdul Wahid at the Faculty of Arts and Creative, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. Recently he has won the “Best Jury’s Selection Award 2007” in Bourges, Paris. Affendi Hj. Ramli is one of the music lecturers in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tg. Malim, Perak, lecturing composition, violin and music technology. He received his Bachelor of Music from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia and Master of Arts in Audio Production from University Of Westminster, United Kingdom.

RONNIE KHOO is a recording enthusiast who works from a home studio. His projects include playing in rock bands, scoring for independent film, and tampering with electronic equipment to make them squeal in unexpected ways.

JAZMOK is a malaysian-based sound artist. His favourite music instruments are mobile gadgets,as the medium of producing his sound.He is interested in malay classical rhythm and other native cultures in malaysia.The sound characteristic of Jazmok is describe as various of oscilator wave and ambient with gong atmosphere. He loves experimenting with sound and had produce several of interactive installation while performing.

FAHMI FADZIL is a performer and writer. He is a member of Five Arts Centre, principal coordinator of Projek Wayang, and partner at Bright Lights At Midnight. Initiated in 2006, Projek Wayang is an experimentation group interested to search, investigate, explore and construct forms of wayang that resonates within an urban, contemporary and cosmopolitan context.

LISA FOO is the co-founder of FOTA Design in 2007 and a design practice in architecture, interior and sculpture. Graduated with BA in Architecture from the University of New South Wales, Sydney at the end of 2003, and after a spell of almost two years with a large commercial practice, Lisa has reveled in the opportunity to design an experimental private house in Kuala Lumpur to strike out on her own. Her involvement in the arts emerged in November 2007 when she was an artist participant at numerous 'Arts for Grabs' event organized by the Annexe Gallery, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur. In the event, her collaboration with her friend formed LFSS and created luminous eco-light sculpture from recycled plastic bottles.

Chinese Food in MMU campus

Dear Students and Friends,

First of all, hurray for the new-in-business Chinese food store in MMU Cyberjaya campus! I've worked here since April 2006 and this is the first time a genuine Chinese food store is in business. I'd really like it to stay in business but it is located away from all the food centres that you all usually go, I'm afraid it doesn't have enough business. So ... forgive me of using the FA blog to help advertising this food store in MMU!

The food store is located right across the newly built running tracks/swimming pool area. They serve rice with selected dishes (nasi campur), and also serve fried or soup noodles on request. Please come support the one and only authentic Chinese food store in MMU!

Besides, there's also a new Iranian food store in the same lot.

The scariest thing about this animation was how well the music fit the ending. I never had a particular track in my mind when I created this animation. When I plopped in Sea Breeze by Sergei Mantis, I was expecting a horrible cut in the end of the animation.

Well, all comments are welcomed good or bad. Hope you enjoy this nonsensical piece of animation.

So much to complain about my home country, where it's over 51 years and yet some things never changed. Or things have just taken a different form. Transportation, education, ethics, government, people in general, and so on.

However, I would still be thankful about this country that has bless with a stable home for us to stay, some decent places to go around, some great food to enjoy and some development is under way to make this better.

is an electro-acoustic improvisation group based in Singapore featuring Darren Moore (laptop/percussion) , Tim O'Dwyer (saxophone) and Brian O'Reilly (electronics/ visual).

Darren Moore is an Australian musician currently based in Singapore. He is involved in various projects as a drummer and as an experimental laptop artist. He has performed and collaborated with musicians such as Jon Rose, Chris Abrahams, Scott Tinkler, Eugene Pao, Tim O'Dwyer, Will Guthrie, Eric Boeren, Wilbert de Joode, Micheal Vatcher to name a few. He has toured throughout Europe, Australia, South East Asia, Japan and the USA. Brian O'Reilly is the creator of various works for moving images/live cinema, electronic/noise music, mixed media assemblage/installa tion, and is a contrabassist, focusing on the integration of electronic treatments and extended playing techniques.

Timothy O'Dwyer: is a composer, saxophonist and educator working between the general areas of music known as jazz, contemporary notated music and improvised music. He has been a member of Elision Contemporary Ensemble since 1994 and was a founding member of the Melbourne cult punk-jazz group bucketrider. Following studies with Evan Parker and composer Richard Barrett in 1995 he has had the privilege of collaborating with many artists that he greatly admires including: John Butcher, Liza Lim, Bobby Previte, KK Null, Chaya Chernowin, and conceptual artists Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, and Katsushige Nakahashi. He is currently programme leader of music and lecturer in jazz at the School of Contemporary Music LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology studying the phenomena of identity in improvised music. His current projects include his jazz group The Tim O'Dwyer Trio and the electro-acoustic
project Iron Egg.

Since 2006, Mark Wong (b. 1982, Singapore) has been developing and refining his own vocabulary for the kazoo, a simple musical instrument traditionally considered a novelty toy. In addition to conventional humming techniques, Wong has germinated blowing, rasping and other vocal scrawlings. Playing off the feedback purity of a no-input mixer, Mark's kazoo becomes the production centre of a certain textural beauty and nervous energy.

Someone had once told me that our patch is on the path, the brightness of our future is depends on whether we can share with each others or not.

It is right. A person's knowledge or info may be max gained, for example, 200% per month.

But if we are sharing with 10 person, that would be 200% X 10 person per month. Let's say we have some same experience in this 10 persons, and 5 of them have same the experience with the other 5... in the end we will still get 1000% gaining experience by sharing with others.

You will not step forward - if you are not willing to share it out haha.

Here's something for a greeting

Hola guys. Been quiet in here lately.

Val'd been asking me to share some stuffs in here. As hesitant (and weird) as I feel, here it is.

Something I just finished (or not). Started as a totally different piece, which really sickened me, it ended as something entirely different. Still not as satisfying as it could've been, though =<.

As aforementioned, the final composition was a derivation from a former unfinished work. Nearly upon abandonment, I decided to pick it up and give it a fresh idea. A fresh concept. Composition.

After lotsa tweak and turns, I settled down on this composition. The first few painting sessions was really inspiring and at the very least satisfying. It was a good learning progress. But upon completion it became....dissappointing. Towards the end, my colour senses became dull, and the forms in the piece're all haywire. Ugh.

I guess I was tired. An artblock kicking in really helped me to retire early on the piece; despite it being kinda unfinished. Prolly need to start on a new project to change atmosphere and all.

Concept wise, it's actually a visualization from an original title; formerly titled "busted bastards", now, untitled. The little box thingy is initially inspired by the ever-crackling little kodamas (tree spirits) from Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke.

Technique wise, most of the parts in this painting is painted manually using the default round brush in Photoshop. Different brushes are used occasionally throughout the production. Some extra layers are used for the effects and textures. Nothing of the exceptional, just applied some of your everyday photoshop techniques.

Uhh, don't know what else to say. I guess it's your turn to drop some insights. Be it comments, critique, suggestions or whatever.

That all being said, damn, I need to improve. Ciao.

The SicKL Open Lab (SOL) is launching its first season with new works in poetry, experimental music, video and film on this coming Saturday, 28 June at the Studio in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (SicKL).

SOL 0001 kicks off its first program with voice composition by Tham Kar Mun- featuring Tham Kar Mun, Yandsen, Kok Siew Wai and Wong Perng Fei; Malaysia premiere experimental video and film works by Au Sow Yee, Huvy and Wong Fe Lik; and a multidisciplinary performance with poetry and visual arts by Tan Yan Tee, Chen Lin Loong, Law Yee Wan and Looi Yook Tho.

That's the big question hovering over my mind right now... Have I lost the ability to enjoy an animated film?

I just saw Kung Fu Panda and in my opinion it is one of the best animated movies ever made, TECHNICALLY. Cause that's all I kept looking at... Fur, Character Design, Animation, Textures, Renders, Cinematography, Direction, Editing, blah blah blah.

I enjoyed the jokes, laughed at them but all I was looking at was everything but the movie. I barely got the story (no thanks to Ali getting us front row seats). All the time I was thinking... hmmm....... nice fur, nice texture, ohh look at the that piece of grass fluttering in the wind in the top left corner of the damn screen, while Po and others were making the kids laugh out loud around me.

I feel sad :(

So how's everyone doing? Here I am again doing the same post I did some time ago. Well today is internship day 02 for most of you guys I assume? So how're you guys lah?

I'll just start with myself. This is my 3rd week working and I have to say that most of what I have been doing is tutorials, tutorials and more tutorials! Why? Simply because where I work they don't use Maya (or Max for that matter). They use this software called SideFX Houdini:

Well yea, Houdini. Well basically its back to square one like learning 3D all over again. If you guys think Maya is a b*tch, wait till you try Houdini... but once you get the hang out of it, you'll start to see how much more efficient Houdini is when it comes to workflow. The software itself works by procedural nodes. Well, yea its hard to explain what procedural workflow is but honestly once you use Houdini, you'll think Maya is like child's play. I know this might bore some of you guys but I managed to find a screenshot of Houdini 9 (the version I am using now)...

Anyway back to internship. The people over here are really nice and helpful and they are very eager to help you start out. I guess for me internship here isn't like how I'd picture it. I thought I would be treated like a slave to some senior or smtg but its not true. Here they really treat you like a full time staff. I get a workstation to myself and all I am asked to do is to learn the software. They said its going to be a long 4 months and so I better learn all that I can. Recently they let me do one of the VFX shots for an upcoming film (which I cannot mention the name of course due to its P&C).

Working hours for me is... hmmm well there is no working actually. All you got to do is make sure you finish what you have to do for the day by 7pm so usually I go in about 10am latest also 10:30am.

I just want to share that if there is smtg I learnt is that I learnt what 3D production is really about. Working in a team. I used to model a lot of cars in Maya and when I was there the senior actually told me what I was doing is not efficient if working in a team cos when they work on a car for example, they will split the jobs some people do interiors, some people do the engine, some do the exteriors. And when there are like 2/3 people working on one car, everyone has to model the exact same method so they it can be combined well and also, the texture artist can start texturing and the animator can start animating even before the model is complete.

Well so how bout you guys? Come share your experiences no matter good or bad. =)

Special effects pioneer and film director Stan Winston died last night at the age of 62. Winston suffered from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, for the past seven years. Throughout his legacy, Winston had a hand in creating some of the most memorable movie characters including The Predator, The Terminator, Edward Scissorhands and most recently Iron Man. He won three Oscars (TERMINATOR 2, ALIENS and JURASSIC PARK) and was nominated for six others. In 1995, Winston and director James Cameron founded Digital Domain, a firm that is still one of the leading FX houses in the world. Winston tried his hand at directing with films like PUMPKINHEAD and A GNOME NAMED GNORM but they were met with less fanfare than his makeup and FX work. He had recently been working on TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS. Winston will always be a godfather to geek cinema and it's hard to fathom modern cinema without the contributions of Stan Winston. Later today Stan Winston Studios will be releasing a list of charities to donate to in lieu of flowers.

I was advised not to post this up, but I felt that I need to remind everyone the importance of these “rules” (nothing offensive, and I’m not pointing finger to anyone), it's just some general reminder to everybody.

Thanks Jason for the comment. I certainly know that my previous post is aggressive and it's going to hurt someone. As my previous post mentioned: one of your friends involved in a controversy problem... I didn’t know who he is but I knew he is from MMU FA, and the only channel I could contact everyone is through the FA blog. I just hoped the fellow could read the blog and stop doing what he was doing immediately... if he continuously posting those false information about the company on the internet, he can be charged guilty and get himself into trouble easily.

What happened was: someone somehow pretended to be a company's staff (actually he is not any of the workers there) and he stupidly gave out his own information by answering questions about that company in an internet forum - he was seriously breaking the law whether the information given out was true or false. He must consider himself extremely lucky as legal actions could have been taken against him. Anyway, later then I was informed that the problem was solved in a proper way, and the guilty person was actually another guy.

A lot of you are looking forward to the working life, everyone is so excited to go out and prove themselves, the motivation is high and the dreams are flying; yet... there are rules that you still need to obey. Silliest mistakes but deadliest penalties.

“Private and confidential” is what I would say... I believe everyone knows the term already. Every company has their own private and confidential information, especially those big scale companies. Most of the top secrets are not to be exposed, but some of it might be passed to the employee for working purposes. Those information are only allowed to pass among their staffs for the project to flow, it cannot be leaked out to the public (usually is stated on the contract you sign). I believe most of you are already 21 years of age, by breaking those rules, you could be charged by the Legal Law of Malaysia.

Anyhow, most of us still tend to share the information among our friends intentionally or unintentionally, as it is the nature of human beings to “gossip”. It is best for you not to speak out any single word, but if you do want to share, please just share with those trusted personnel or trusted friends; and certainly, you don’t post those information in the internet stupidly as those could be used as evidence to against you! Being framed would not be a valid excuse, you are still guilty for leaking those P&C information to public.

I hope everyone can take this seriously, the rules is for you to follow and not for you to break. And one last thing, please don’t ask about the salary of the company’s staff, is quite a sensitive topic to certain people.

Back to the FA blog, what kind of sharing do you all like to receive? Those “what a wonderful world” kind of things? I tracked back some of the post and almost all of them are praise, wonderful, nice work, showing out some of their stuff without any comment from their friends and some commercial kind of thing. What a heavenly peace post. Everything is so positive and when it comes to critic, everyone keeps quiet and don’t want to get involve. It certainly not my kind of world.

I'm very glad that Jason stepped out and do some criticism on my post. Thanks. I believe most of you have been offended by my posts but still chose to keep quiet. I have been doing this kind of criticism job for the pass few years and it is normal to receive aggressive replies from audiences. People feel harsh to accept the truth most of the time, and tend to cover it with some beautiful words. I’m not sure how much everyone can receive the pain when I posted up my 1st article a month ago. I tried to soften my words but I end up chosen to treat you as an adult rather than a young student. When it is good then it is good, when it is bad you'll take the feedback and you need to improve. I don’t mean that all my comments are good, but at least I voice out my opinions. That is what sharing means to me.

Well... my intention was to come here to help. But if you want this devil to go away from here forever, I’m more than happy to do so. :)

Please beware of what you are talking and what you post on the internet.

Mglrulz, 石头仔，Stop talking nonsense and stop pretending that you are the company staffs who know many things about that company. You are digging graveyard for yourself.

The Puppets - Si Ying

Well… I played your MG a few times… looking at those detail you had made in the animation … I hardly spot a mistake in it. Honestly, you really had done a good job on it. From the main character to the background, you had spent a lot of effort to create them.

The trees, the puppet stages, the puppet themselves, I know that you duplicated them… is ok to duplicate as long as those assets don’t look repetitive and I think you manage to do that quite successfully.

You have a very great sense of art; you manage to grab what you planning for and executed it with great accuracy (I believe that you come form 2D background). Color scheme, characters designs, theme, concept, staging and most important the pace of the MG, you manage to associate your animation movement, pace and transition with the music beat and this had add a lot of depth in your MG. (the music recording is so professional, you create it yourself? Or you cut from movies?)

Well, the only weak point in you is the storytelling. You have an interesting story, but you did not manage to convey it to the audience. I have looked at the MG a couple of times; I still can’t really understand the real story. Well maybe I’m too stupid for that, haha... anyway I try to interpret the story again in my mind and hit me if I’m wrong. :D

“The story is about a girl, ran into the village of puppets lead by the pigeon….temptation to steal all the beautiful puppets. All the puppet villagers are actually from real person, all of them are just like the little girl, so greedy stealing all the puppets and end up turning into puppet themselves because of touching the mighty 'lion king' ”

That is the story interprets in my mind from your MG.

“Acting” is lacking from your MG, that's why it is so hard to understand what the main character is doing. Because it is a puppet, you tend to ignore the facial expression. Imagine that you have a bunch of friend that showing you the same facial expression all the time, for sure you won’t understand what they are thinking of. Or you can try talking to a tree, scold a lot of bad words to the tree, and you won’t know whether it is angry because it doesn’t have a facial expression. Of course you will know it is angry if the tree hit you with it branches, and this is the time when body gesture comes.

Facial expression is strongly associates with body gestures. Body gestures can be used to drive the message if the facial expression is missing. They usually will come together to support each other. But in your case, understandable that puppet has limited movement, so it is very hard to tell a story with body gestures. Missing of this 2 important elements in your MG causes you the failure to deliver your message to the audience.

In my opinion... You can actually add facial expressions on the puppets. Don’t just treat them as a 2D character billboard with no ‘life’ in within. Some basic smile, sad, cry, angry will certainly help a lot. Inject some life into your puppets.

Or… if you still want to stick with your cool-faced puppets (might be your style or concept), you can add subtitle or voice over for your MG. Just like what you did at the beginning of your MG, is a pretty cool sound and it has created a lot of mood. It's ok to add voice over in your case, so that the story was told and it links your MG from the beginning till the end.

Try think about it... :) Or if you have your own opinion and we can share it. With other juniors of course. I think you will welcome some suggestion from your junior as well, right?

Overall, you really had done a good job, you can get any job you want by showing them your final work, no problem with that. You have a great future ahead. ;)

Yeah...its been a while since i post up sumthing here. Since the robot topic is really something that i have interest in, i might as well post a response here. So..this is a 3D robot model i did for a part time job sometime during the midterm break last semester. Its done with 3ds max 9 + Maxwell Render. Any C&C is welcomed. :D

Experiment on ROBOT

Hi everyone, FA Fondue Night rocks! Do you guys enjoy it? I enjoyed rocking the chocolate chips before it melts xD and for the first time, 2 hair dryers became our heroes.

Holidaysssssssssssss... and I'm so free. So, I take out my tablet and wanted to draw something. Normally I don't draw any other things except human. I'm weak in drawing buildings, cars, furnitures, animals...... anything. I can't imagine their shape in my mind.

However, I wanted to do something different today > (

So, I decided to try on robots, because... they look like human.

This is my first quick sketch which is...... very horrible.

I post it up is not to give you an eyesore but I know that many of you are good in mechanical drawings. I thought you might have some comments and advices.

I would like to see how you guys design a robot too. Since we are so free now, we can have a robot session here. Everyone post up their own robot to share :D Different design different style.

Lastly, wanna wish all of us good luck in internship. See you next sem.

Wow…. Seem like everyone had a wonderful FA Fondue last nite. Chocolate~~ my favorites~~ Too bad I couldn’t join the fun..:( Too rush for me….

Anyone heard of Gobelins?

Anyone? Yes? No? Gobelins Art School….. Yup is a famous Art School base in Paris. Every year the students in Gobelins produce high standard art pieces, animation included of course. I believe everyone saw the animation “Le building” before…rite? Yup… is done by a group of students there. Besides that “Le Building” there is plenty of great 3D works come out from the school every year.

Ermm…….What if I ask everyone of the gamma students to set Gobelins as your target for next year FYP…. Can you beat them? Or at least equal to the standard that they have display? Tough rite… still has long long way to go….but no harm…. You aim higher and you will climb faster to reach it. Maybe 1 day MMU FA will become the talking point of all the art school in the world… or maybe next year will be that year…. Who knows who knows…. Haha…

FYP (For Your Pride)

Is a bit ridiculous to hear about this question at this stage... haha well, no question is a stupid question. So I will still answer that. Pay attention Loveless. /:)

Basically, FYP is the short form of “Final Year Project.” It's an animation project that you're going to do throughout your final year (Delta), and you're going to present it to the outside audience just like what your seniors did last Thursday. Your 1st job and your future destiny will very much depend on this, so please be very serious on it.

During my year, my FYP started on the 2nd semester which I needed to write a thesis, and I did a research on a topic selected by ourselves. Do keep it simple and special. Always try to narrow down your topic so that you can have a better grip on it. Focus on how you're going to clean your toilet rather than to build a bungalow with a thousand of pipes. (well this is just an example, imagine if you can invent a automatic cleaning machine for toilet, the world will love you, especially China - an example on how a small detail can affect a big thing :D )

Your study of your thesis is related to what you're going to do in FYP, so choose wisely. Normally, you will start your preproduction at the beginning of 3rd semester (after the thesis). But then you have only 3 months left for your FYP, which is… too little time for you to come up with a stunning artwork - remember you will still have other courses to take care.

So, my advice is: Start your preproduction on 1st semester when you are doing your industrial training. You will have more time than you've ever imagined during the training period, so utilize those 3 months to plan what you're going to do for FYP and what you're going to research on your thesis. Like what Mr. Moon from Moon FX mentioned last Thursday, the most important stage of a production is preproduction stage. You plan your time, you prepare your tasks, you come out with sketches, you have a vision or visualization on what you going to do in your FYP... plan your progress wisely. “No time to do” is just an excuse. Pixar Animation Studio has only 24 hours per day, just like us. So do a good planning on your time management (take note kito :D).

And one funny thing is… usually people will neglect the time for rendering. During my year I've always heard that my friends have not enough time to render. (Is just like you have prepared the spice, you have cooked the food, but you have no time to serve to your customer). Always reserve at least 3 weeks for rendering. Bare in mind that usually “error” will occur during that technical period.

During you industrial training, you will be exposed to many ideas. You will see a lot of things, and you will have many things playing in your mind. Most of the people will get confused, and some of them will get ambitious, thinking of doing “big thing”, “big project”, “epic story”, or doing the “War of The World” kind of animation - good is good… but it is ridiculous. Keep your ideas for your future, you will not have enough time to do an epic story for your FYP. Again, keep it simple. A simple story happen in one scene will do. For example, those Pixar’s short movies like “Gerie’s Chess”, “For the Birds”, “One Man Band” or “Lifted”… everything happen in one respective scene, it's easier to focus, and yet is a world class animation short movie. Compare to it, and ask yourself... can you do it? Why not. It's not too fantasy for you, right? Just keep it simple… no epic story!!!

Wow… I talked too much again. I think I'll stop right here. I will share my thoughts again in the future. Remember, do a good planning during your preproduction~~ good luck in your training. And, please ask more questions~~~ ask, ask, ask, ask, ask and ask again~~~ as a student you have the right to do so! :D

Some Words from an Old Senior

Hi everyone,

Hi there... this is the 1st time I post in FASStudio, I'm new in this blogger... so... hi... haha. For those who dont know who am I... well... just keep "dont know who am I".

I'm 1 of your FA seniors. I've graduated way before any of you entered MMU. I get to know about this FASStudio Bloggie site from somewhere, someone, and I'd love to talk to the FA Gamma students... and some Delta students perhaps.

I have something to share.This is my 1st post... so I hope is not too harsh for everyone. I went for the Delta FA industrial Presentation last Thursday, congratulations for making it a success... but in terms of the artworks, what I can say is... "disappointing".

"The worst ever presentation" since I entered MMU. Almost all the artworks presented are low in standard, some uncompleted work, some noticeable last minute work and many of the students did not even turn up for the presentation. Come on people you call this an industrial presentation, but have u ever taken it seriously and show some respect to the industry people? How could you display that kind of spirit and attitude to the outside industry? It almost embarrassed FA in many ways.

The industry’s 3 big names - Codemasters, Silver Ant and Moon FX attended the presentation, and it was the 1^st time I heard such harsh criticism from them, calling the students as “living too long in palm oil estate”… “you wont get a job with the artwork”… “children’s cartoon”. I Believe those Gamma students who attended the presentation would have heard of these.

And I had no surprise… soon after the presentation my boss did mention that non of the students are qualified for interview unless they improve their portfolios... wasted the whole morning, that's the end of topic, and he never discuss more on any of the students.

Well, in my opinion there are still some potential artworks in within. Nothing outstanding honestly, the only artwork that is still playing in my mind is the “puppet” motion graphic. Even that doesn’t have a proper story telling.

I wonder why all the Delta FA students look toothless in their animations… They seem like still living in the box and never get exposed to the outside world. 3D is not a new topic in Malaysia anymore. It had been here since 10 years ago. With the current technology, cinema, internet and “YouTube” playing all over the world, lack of exposure is just an excuse. Everyone know about Pixar Animation Studio, Dreamwork studio… I believe most of the people had enjoyed great animation movies such as “The Incredible”, “Finding Nemo”, “Cars” “ Shrek123” and etc etc….

You had spent your 2 years (or 3 years) as a Film and Animation student, had any of you took the initiative to study those world class animations? Or you just “enjoy” the movies like everyone else… if so what for you go for FA? Besides those featured animation movies, there are plenty of short animation clips out there that are worth watching. With such convenient sources everywhere nowadays, I don’t see a reason why the industry have to tolerate with the student's level.

For all the Gamma students, I have seen some of the artworks from you guys in YouTube, and I'm glad to see some of them are up to expectation. Especially the Motion Graphics, is quite good but I have some concern… most of you using the same style to present your works which is the freestyle camera movement moving all around the same platform with some interesting planes and low poly objects… It look nice honestly at 1^st glance… but do imagine that if everyone is using the same old style during the presentation, 100 presenters have presented, and I believe I cant differentiate who did which Motion Graphics… and nothing is outstanding anymore. My suggestion is… try explore more styles. Get yourself out of your own thought and think of something that you have never imagined before. Get out of your own comfort zone and make your graphic special from others.

And, for Character Animation… still have long way to go. Study back your Principle of Animations. Remember you have 4 main things to focus on which is Staging, Texturing, Lighting and the Animation itself. Staging is the composition in your every scene and very much linked with texturing and lighting.

For Animation, do more studies on body gestures and facial expressions. Try to understand how both of them interact with each others, exaggerate it!!! Personally I like the teaser trailer from “The Incredible” (body gesture) and “One Man Band” (facial expression). Both from Pixar Animation Studio.

For everyone,

Try some new effects such as fluid effect, cloth and hair. They are so simple nowadays compared to the previous time, and you can just do it with few clicks in Maya. Or, create some new effects on your own. Let everyone be shocked with surprise, wondering "WOW... how did you do that".

Lastly, I’m not trying to act like senior or grand master or something, I just don’t like to see the standard of FA falling year by year. For all Gamma students… I believe you all are going for industry training early next month. Try expose yourself to the industry, ask more, do more learn more and be less ego. It is a wild jungle out there, and you have to learn more to survive, and I believe you can do so.

I hope Gamma students will bounce back next year, and MMU FA students will always be the priority when they go for job interviews.

Si si siiiiii! A mini Fondue Night for all FA students and lecturers is coming up!
This is actually a make up for the FA night we've missed due to some circumstances :(

There will be screenings of the works by Beta, Gamma and Delta students :D While enjoying ze screening there will be fondue served for everyone! :D (imagine the chocolate fountain everyone!) *slurpsss* Can bond bond with each other oso! hehe

Unfortunately everything is still in waiting for confirmation since it is really a last minute planning. So we desperately want some respond and support from our beloved classmates! :D

"DECONSTRUCTION"

Thu 8 to Sun 11 May, The Annexe Studio

Presented by Dasein Academy of Art final year students

Forty two students finishing their courses in graphic design, illustration

and fine art showcase their best student works in a variety of media

including T-shirts, books, typography, furniture, lamps, in addition to

paintings, the students use the theme of "deconstruction" as a starting

point for exploring their youth-fuelled arty aspirations. Opened to the public.

On Saturday, 10 May, 1pm, there will be a special talk

by representatives of the students and Dasein Academy, followed

by music performances from Flica, Silent Scenery and Dian Bang.

the main concept is the combination of 3 tshirts~
where i did line art from the 1st shirt untill the 3rd shirt.

Yaaaaaay another crit is over! We really should slack for awhile! Just gotten this interesting event's info from Mr. Azman which I think we all should go for it (as we are the very artistic people)! It is another event organized by The Annexe Gallery featuring 40 stalls by some known and not-yet-known artists selling their paintings, drawings, photos, self-designed T-shirts, hand-made accessories, hand-sewn dolls, sculptures, music, movies + artistic services! Besides that, there will be a Workshops on Tap-Dancing + Modern Jazz Dance or Chill Out with Cupcakes + Coffee in the Loft ( *blink blink blink* )! :D So everybody mark the date now!

Wawaweewa.. busy week. Just to update you on what's going on this week:

Tuesday (April 15th)
- Presentation/talk by the Lucasfilm people in the E-Theatre at 11am. They'll be talking about their apprenticeship program in Singapore.

Wednesday (April 16th)
- Presentation/talk by reps from CG Overdrive (FA Studio, 10am).

On Wednesday, they'll be using the studio in the morning, so the project discussions are gonna be in the afternoon. (*CA people, wanna see all of you in my office on that day).

* those of you who are not going to be around that afternoon for whatever reason (Lucasfilm talk/intern briefing/job interview/whatever), let us know earlier.

Biljana Ciric is an independent curator based in Shanghai and holds the position Artistic Director of Ke Center of Contemporary Arts as well as being the executive curator for the Intrude Public art project presented by Zendai MoMA. She was the director of the Curatorial Department at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art and the China networking curator for the 2006 Singapore Biennale. Her ambitious ongoing project Migration Addicts was presented at the 52nd Venice Biennale.

Ciric will speak about her past curatorial projects and ongoing projects such as the 'Intrude366' project at Zendai MOMA and the upcoming Yoko Ono show in Shanghai.

Film X Sound is about seeing the sounds in film.
